Broome Manor AwayDay - June 2024

20 seemingly starving golfers arrived at Broome Manor Golf Club to be greeted by the team there and raucous cheers erupted when the bacon rolls appeared!!

Tipple on the Tee
We headed out to the putting green and then onto the first tee for the traditional pre-game tipple. A very
lively smoked whiskey provided by last months Away Day winner John Smythe. Then it was onto the long course with first tee off time with a mix of 3 and 4 balls.

The first hole at Broome Manor is a long par 5 that starts off downhill with a large bunker and a number of ditches and hedges to navigate. Predictably quite a few of us ended up in one or the other.

The course was in very good condition, always a surprise that this is a public course and not a members club. As long as you could miss the ditches which crossed over at strategic points, stay out of the deep, well placed bunkers and avoid the patches over very long grass (only an issue if you went well off line) there were plenty of scoring opportunities.

It was definitely a game of 2 halves with 4 TOFS members scoring over 20 points on the front 9 and a completely different group of 4 TOFS golfers scoring over 20 on the back 9. In the end there were 9 total scores of 36 or more and 16 scores over 30 points.

The results were as follows:

Chris Malin
Most golf played
(with 21 points and winning a bottle of wine) – Chris Malin (Chris gets to supply the wine for the next Away Day too).

Andrew Shepeard
Nearest the pin – Frank Parnell took an early lead on this and was still in pole position until the last group but in the end was pipped at the post by a great shot from Andrew Shepheard to around 8 feet. Andrew won £10 and a sleeve of balls.

Alex Fraser
Overall Stableford competition
In joint fifth place with a score of 38 points were Graham Harding and Arthur Strain

But there was a 3 way tie for first place with 39 points between myself (Rob L), Simon Jones and Alex Fraser. So we went to countback over the back 9 holes and in the end the 1, 2, 3 was: Alex Fraser – 39 points (23 on the back 9) Simon Jones – 39 points (21 on the back 9) Rob Lindley – 39 points (16 on the back 9)

So Alex wins £15 plus a sleeve of balls, the TOFS trophy and a beautifully printed winners certificate!! Alex joins John Smythe and Rob Lindley as winners so far receiving a 2 handicap reduction for the remaining Away Days for this year and he also gets to supply the tipple on the tee for next time.

Hope you all had a good day.

Rob.
