The Four Putters |
Our team was Dave Bolus, Rob Lindley, Steve Gray and Brian White playing off handicaps of 22, 22, 21 and 32 respectively.
After the usual coffee and bacon rolls and lots of chat about the England game we headed out to the first tee for our 1008 start time in warm, sunny weather.
Format was team Stableford. Best two scores on each hole and all four counting on the four par 3s. The par 3 holes at Weybrook have a lot of danger around them so this was always likely to be pivotal.
We made a good start with 5 points on the first with Rob making a par 5 and 6 on the second with Brian holing a monster putt for a par 4 and 4 points. We were solid but not spectacular on the par 3s where all scores counted achieving 8, 7, 8 and 6 points but crucially no disasters. But it was on the holes where Dave, Rob and Steve got an extra shot that really made the difference. On holes with SI 1-4 we scored 6, 7, 7 and 6 respectively from just 2 scores counting on each with the pars flying in for 4 points. Everyone contributed.
We thought our score of 105 (51 front, 54 back) was going to be pretty competitive as a par score is 88 and so it proved. As the organiser read back the team scores from 10th place it was clear we were in the top three.
And when second place was awarded with 100 points we knew we had won by 5 points!!
So a victory for TOFS with us each winning a voucher to spend in the Pro Shop. (You can see us holding out purchases in the photo).
The day was rounded off with a well earned beer and lasagne and chips and as always hospitality at Weybrook was excellent. Not sure if we will be invited again after winning by 5 points and coming second at the Badgemore Park challenge last year so the TOFS savoured this victory on the road.
