Broome Manor AwayDay - June 2025

The Tipple on the Tee
Hello golfers
I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful sunshine at Broome Manor Golf Course on Tuesday.  The course was in lovely condition, albeit the greens at a very slow pace.  The dinner served in the evening - beef and ale pie with mashed potatoes and veg - was very much appreciated by everyone (especially Steve Bury who always wants steak and ale pie!)

We started the prize giving with the winners of the recent Super Six competition: Dave Bolus and Chris Smyth for best Stableford and best Gross respectively.

On to the Awayday, we had two nearest the pins on holes 3 and 6 which were won by Arthur Strain and Dave Roberts – both very close to the pin.

The Team Stableford score of 113 was achieved by Team 1 made up of Steve Bury, Steve Gray, Jim Hetherington and Ron Jones.  Congratulations to all of them!

Trolley Trouble!!
Best Stableford scores were Brian White in 3rd place with 44 points, and Malcolm Peck in 2nd place with 45 points (once he had retrieved his trolley from the hedge!) who was just pipped at the post by Jim Hetherington with an impressive 46 points (to be deducted two shots in the next awayday).

The Best Gross score for the day with only 89 shots was Graham Plested.   Very well done in that temperature, even though he did try to kill the Captain on hole 18 with his massive drive!

I hope Kevin Comley enjoyed his first time at the TOFS awayday.  He certainly made the most of the day by playing the most golf and won a lovely bottle of Malbec donated by Peter Saunders.

Happy golfing!

Wychwood AwayDay - May 2025

Our second awayday at the Wychwood Golf Club proved very popular with 28 players signing up and 27 playing as Colin unfortunately had to go in for an operation.

The weather was lovely, 20 degrees+, and the course condition was excellent.

We were treated to pork belly for dinner after the game and looked after very well by the two ladies serving us.

The Tipple on the Tee

As usual, we had four competitions; the first being the best Stableford score which was won by Steve Gray scoring 43 points, followed closely by Chris Barclay and Brian Monnery.  The best gross score was held by Graham Plested who only took 89 shots to complete the round.
Steve Gray, Chris Barclay & Brian Monnery

Nearest the pin on holes 6 and 15 were Lee Wooldridge and Steve Bury respectively.

Finally, the team Stableford competition was won by Team 7 consisting of Steve Gray, Ron Jones, Chris Barclay and Andrew Shepheard with an impressive 108 points.

Most Golf Played - Peter Saunders

I think it would be very well received if we played this again as an awayday next year.

I hope you are all looking forward to the next awayday at Broome Manor on 17 June.  However, we will be limiting this to 24 players.

Happy golfing!

Golf can be a difficult game.....

When things go wrong on the course you can always rely on your mates in the TOFS to help you out.......and one to take a photo😂😂

Marlborough AwayDay - April 2025

The Tipple on the Tee
Well, our first away day at Marlborough golf club seems to have been a great success!  The weather gods were very good to us and left it until we had all finished before a dousing of rain. The course was in good condition, albeit hilly in places, and I hope everyone enjoyed the catering provided.

The Congratulations to Colin Bulpin for winning the best Stableford score with an amazing 51
points! He will be deducted two points off his handicap as usual and I’m sure his
handicap will be coming down soon anyway as he is playing so well. Congratulations
also to Davinder for coming second with a very good 44 points; again it is nice to see his
handicap coming down as his game improves. In third position was Chris Malin, who I
played with; he had a great game, coming in with 42 points.

Colin (51), Davinder (44) and Chris (42)

Nearest the pin on hole 2 was Frank Parnell, followed by Jim Hetherington on hole 14, both very good shots.

In the team event, team 4 – Arthur, Alex, Colin and Davinder - won with an impressive 119 points.

Best gross score was Graham Plested with only 90 shots. (He tells me it would have been less if he could putt!)

Last, but not least, Dave Bolus played the most golf, taking in many parts of the course we didn’t see!

Looking forward to the next away day at The Wychwood. See you all there, guys.

Best wishes,
Lee Wooldridge

4 Putters Retain Weybrook Title

We all arrived expecting the sun to be shining and temperatures to be climbing to a sultry 15 degrees C, to an overcast and what felt like 5 degrees C, so it wasn’t long before Steve Grey was covering up his summer shorts with trousers and a wind sheeter!

The defence of our Spring title started slowly with a disappointing score of just 2 points secured on the first hole, but this picked up with 5 points on the 2nd and 8 points on the first of the four par 3’s where all scores counted and we closed the first 9 holes with a respectable 49 points, after a 7 point score on the 8th par 4 hole, where Brian W achieved a 4 point birdie following a 264 yd drive to the edge of the green and both Rob L and Steve G scored 3 pointers!

The back 9 holes saw the team get to grip with the very slow greens (compared to Drayton’s) and we put down some some good scores, with Dave B scoring another 4 pointer on the 12th and especially with the whole team contributing on the four par 3’s where all players scores counted, where an 8, 9, 10 and 11 points were secured, forming the bedrock of a final score of 104 points and only one short of our winning score last year.

Although we thought we might be in with a good chance again, we were still apprehensive as the presentation began with the TOFS sister team (Alex Fraser, Derek Copson, John Smythe and Dick Capel Davies) announced in a credible 10th place out of 16 teams, with their struggles on the par 3’s hindering their team score of 89 points, followed by several teams on 90 points, then 92, 94, 95 and 100 points for 2nd place, finally we relaxed as the “4 Putters” team (Dave Bolus, Rob Lindley, Steve Grey and Brian White) were announced as the Winners!
