Weybrook Park AwayDay - April 2024

A thoroughly enjoyable day at Weybrook Park with 20 members attending.

The day began with a very tasty and well prepared Full English breakfast with coffee and OJ and then we all headed down to the East course (19th hole) for the tipple on the tee (in memory of John Scoble’s wife Pam) and the team photo.

As per last year we played the 9 holes of the East course followed by the first 9 holes of the West Course (which completely confused mine and Brian Wray’s Garmins).

We went out in 7 X 3 balls although one ended up being a 2 ball as Humph was a mysterious no show.

The weather was good. A little chilly at the start and occasionally breezy on the higher holes but dry and the course was in excellent condition with very good fairways, excellent true greens and even the bunkers were in good shape (as Brian Wray can confirm – get you a bucket and spade next time Brian).

Pete Saunders and Chris Malin are no longer members at Drayton Park so they joined us as guests as did former captain Mark Wright.
NTP - Mark Wright
And it was Mark that took the first honours of the day winning nearest the pin with a shot to about 10-12 feet getting inside Arthur’s early effort. Congratulations Mark winning £10 and a sleeve of balls.

Overall scoring was pretty good with a number of gross birdies being scored along the way including Brian Wray, John Smythe, Paul Wynn and myself.

Without the putting competition most rounds were completed just inside 4 hours.

In the absence of Graham to keep an eye on the scores coming in it was a slightly chaotic prize giving presentation with the Top Honours as follows:

Joint 5th – Tim Church and Andrew Shepheard on 33 points with Andrew claiming 5th place on countback

Joint 2nd was where all the confusion came in as 3 players all came in with 35 points, 2 of which had 21 points on the back nine. Eventually though business was settled with:

Steve Grey – 4th place – 35 points 18 on the back 9

Paul Wynn – 3rd place – 35 points with 21 on the back 9 and 12 on the back 6 winning £5

John Smythe – 2nd place – 35 points with 21 on the back 9 and 14 on the last 6 winning £10

And the overall winner was … myself (sorry guys) Rob Lindley with 41 points, 24 of which were scored on the front 9.

I will be playing with a 2 handicap penalty in future Away Days in addition to the cut I will get in England Golf (stupid to win the first one of the year) and I will supply the Tipple on the Tee for next time.

Winner of the “Most golf played” with the lowest overall points receiving a bottle of wine supplied by Malcolm Peck was Jim Hetherington with 24 points, just behind Chris Malin with 25 and Malcolm Peck and Pete Saunders (26).

Hope everyone had a great day. Obviously I did!
Next Away Day is Tuesday 21st May at West Berks Golf Club.

All the best
Rob Lindley
