We headed out to the putting green and then onto the first tee for the traditional pre-game tipple. Honeyed Jack Daniels kindly provided by last months Away Day winner Chris Smyth (sorry you couldn't be there Chris).
Lovely to see a full compliment of 24 TOFS shirts on display!!
Then it was onto the course in six groups 4 balls for our individual and team competition. Some interesting drives off the first tee in breezy conditions. Hinksey provides some interesting and different challenges with its varied slopes, humps, bumps and cambers. And of course it offers magnificent views of Oxford. The course was very good condition, tricky greens with some challenging pin positions and of course a much longer course than most we play on.
The challenging course and breezy conditions was reflected in the scoring with only 2 golfers scoring more than 36 points.
The results were as follows:
Most golf played (with 17 points and winning a bottle of wine specially sourced (by me) from Kefalonia – Hugh Lawton. Making his first appearance at a TOFS Away Day and coming away with a prize! Unfortunately Hugh also lost all three of the Hinksey Heights branded Srixon balls he bought on the day.

Brian (36) Colin(38) Lee (38) |
In joint third place with scores of 36 points were the Brian brothers (Wray and Monnery) with Brian Wray ultimately winning £5 on back 9 countback.
We had another tie for first place with 38 points between Lee Wooldridge and Colin Bulpin. So we went to countback over the back 9 holes and then to back 6 and finally to the back 3 holes to produce the final result:
Lee Wooldridge – 38 points (21 on the back 9 and 6 on the back 3)
Brian Wray - 36 points
So Colin wins his first ever TOFS prize wins £20 plus a sleeve of balls, the TOFS trophy and a beautifully printed winners certificate (to follow)!! In the car home Colin told me it was the best day of his life (not really).
Colin joins Chris Smyth, Andrew Shepheard, Alex, John Smythe and myself as winners so far receiving a 2 handicap reduction for the remaining Away Days for this year and he also gets to supply the tipple on the tee for next time. Six different winners at six Away Days
In the Team Competition it was very close with just 8 points between first and sixth.
Overall Results:
Team Shepheard (Andrew, Clifford, John and Malcolm) - 94 pts
Team Lindley (Rob, Hugh, John Sm and Gavin) - 93 pts
Team Wooldridge (Lee, Dave, David and Jim) - 92 pts
Team Strain (Arthur, Steve G, Graham H, Brian) - 91 pts
Team Plested (Graham P, Derek, Simon, Chris) - 89 pts (thanks for coming in - again)
The day was rounded off by Cumberland sausage and chips supplied by the team.
Next Away Day is Tuesday 15th October at Hennerton Golf Club. Fun course with lots of interesting short and long holes.
