West Berks Awayday - May 2024

21 keen hungry golfers arrived at West Berks Golf Club to be greeted by the team there and a very
generous full English breakfast with two sausages!! Suitably full and with a little indigestion we headed out to the practice area and then onto the first tee for the traditional pre-game tipple. A choice of 12 year old whiskey or St Lucian rum provided by last months Away Day winner (me).

Then it was onto the long West Berks course with seven three ball groups starting off with the first of four par five holes. The course was in very good condition. Fairways excellent, greens well maintained if a little slow and lots of strategically placed bunkers. And trees … lots of trees … The early scoring pace was set by some of the first groups out onto the course. Generally the course favoured longer hitters who could keep it reasonably straight (who knew?).
Peter Saunders

In the end the results were as follows:

Most golf played (with 22 points and winning a bottle of wine) - Pete Saunders (Pete gets to supply the
wine for the next Away Day too).

Nearest the pin - a great tactical selection of hole 7 allowed Lee Wooldridge the opportunity to be literally the only person to find the green. Lee won £10 and a sleeve of balls.
Rob Lindley & Lee Wooldridge

Overall Stableford competition:
In third place with a score of 34 points (would have been 36 but I was carrying a 2 shot reduction in my handicap after winning at Weybrook). - myself (Rob Lindley).

2nd: Tim Church

In second place with a score of 36 points and winning £10 - Tim Church.

Winner : John Smythe
And the winner with a score of 37 points and winning £15 plus a sleeve of balls, the TOFS trophy and a beautifully printed winners certificate - John Smythe. John receives a 2 handicap reduction for the remaining Away Days for this year and gets to supply the tipple on the tee for next time.

Hope you all had a good day. Next Away Day is at the excellent course Broome Manor near Swindon on Tuesday 18th June. Hope to see you all there and hopefully at Drayton on Friday.
