Today, I received the sad news of Eric Jackson’s death on the 28th December. He was 78 years old.
Eric had been an active member of the TOFs and Men’s Seniors for a number of years and was, truly, one of the nicest people you could meet. When I first joined the TOFs, 4 years ago, Eric played off a 19 handicap and, whilst he couldn’t hit the ball as far as some players, his short-game skills were to be greatly admired. A ‘chip and a putt’ was all Eric needed for another good score.Unfortunately, Eric suffered with his health which deteriorated during last year and this limited his appearances on the golf course. He still had a great interest in looking at the TOFs website to see how everyone was getting on, especially with the Ryder Cup matches.
Eric provided the ‘Tipple on the Tee’ at Hadden Hill and I’m humbled that we were able to toast Eric on that day.

"So sad. RIP from us all.""So sorry to hear of Erics passing, a lovely man I enjoyed his company and playing golf with him. RIP."
".... a true gentleman, who we all will sorely miss."
"So sad to hear of Eric passing and such a shame we weren’t able to see him just before Christmas. Such a lovely guy who will be so much missed. RIP Eric"
"He was a real gentleman. So sad."
"I had the privilege of partnering Eric in a couple of Seniors Matches. Fond memories. As you will all be aware, in comparison to most, I hadn’t known Eric for very long, maybe 18-24 months. But, I do know that Eric loved his Golf. And Golf will miss him. So shall I. As, no doubt, we all will."
"He was such a nice guy and always good to play golf with. Such a shame."
"The common thread in the comments is what a nice guy Eric was and I totally agree with this. It was a real pleasure to play a round with him."
"Very sad news, If I may ditto everyone’s comments"
"He was a smashing gent with a dry sense of humour. When I turned up for my first ever round with the TOFS I was lucky enough to play with Eric and he showed me the ropes as well as gently taking the p*** out of me when I put about 6 balls in the water. He will be sadly missed. "
"A good bloke, we'll miss him"
"I only played with him once, he was lovely and friendly. Thoughts are with his family"
"Sorry to hear about Eric and I endorse everything that has been said about him. Yes, he was a good golfing companion and a true gent! I am also sure he would feel very satisfied, if he knew the kind things that have been said by his golfing buddies."

" I can only echo the sentiments from everyone. I last saw Eric in the summer, sitting on a buggy outside the clubhouse. He was explaining to me how much he valued playing with the TOFS and if this meant using a buggy, then so be it. I count myself lucky to have played with him many times. An absolute gentleman, he taught me a lot - and just not about golf. RIP Eric."
