Rye Hill AwayDay - Nov 2023

On Tuesday 14th November, 17 of us had an Away Day at Rye Hill Golf Club near Banbury. This was a first time for an Away Day although a few TOFs had played there many years ago.

The usual Bacon Roll and Coffee were had by all. After the Tipple on the Tee, provided by Arthur, and the precautionary waterproof clothing we set off. Knowing that all bunkers were GUR gave us some confidence at least. We were also playing off the Gold Tees which was somewhat shorter than the Yellow Tees, but still a challenge.

Rye Hill is quite a forgiving course in that it has quite wide fairways, so even a slightly wayward shot would still allow you with an opportunity to play your next shot without a penalty.

The front 9 were somewhat up and down, but I thought the back 9 were really interesting to play and gave different challenges, especially the par 3 17th, which was almost a blind shot straight into the low sun. It was a good job this wasn’t NTP.

Simon Jones won 1st prize with a very respectable 40 points. Dave Bolus was 2nd with 39 and Terry Stacey just pipped Arthur Strain on countback for 3rd place with 38 points.

Dave Bolus was NTP winner. Although only 150 yds, a strong head-wind made club selection really important and only a few TOFs managed to land their ball on the green.

The least number of putts was won by Graham Harding with 28 putts.

Malcolm Peck and Alex (despite his new Hybrid pitching wedge) were both in contention for Most Use of the Course, with 28 points each, but Malcolm won the bottle of wine on countback. This now means that Malcolm has won the best stableford, NTP, least putts and Most Use of the Course this year – what an achievement.

The meal afterwards was a delicious stew made up of slow cooked diced chicken in red wine with potatoes and Mediterranean vegetables. The perfect end to the day.

Next months Away Day is our traditional December visit to Hadden Hill followed by a Christmas dinner. Christmas jumpers are an option, as are the flashing lights worn by several players last year.
