Our September away day took us to Kirtlington Golf Club. What should have been a short drive up the A34 North for many tuned into a bit of a nightmare due to traffic congestion, closed roads and heavy downpours of rain.
On finally arriving at Kirtlington it was still raining and it looked like we had a wet day ahead.
Undeterred 22 TOFS (should have been 23, where were you Humph?) met in their splendid clubhouse to enjoy our coffee and bacon rolls, sorted out the tee times, agreed to play both NTP and HI2 , and prepared ourselves for the days golfing ahead.
Miraculously, as if pre-arranged, the skies cleared just before we set off for our “Tipple on the Tee”, this time a Cognac kindly provided by Peter S.
A few practise swings and putts later we then set out in 6 groups. The course is one of the most picturesque courses we have visited and was in excellent condition and a pleasure to play at, providing some stunning views across Oxfordshire with some very challenging holes. As a bonus the rain kept away except maybe for the last group on the last hole where it just started to drizzle a bit.
After the round we all met in the clubhouse to enjoy a welcome drink and to have our meal. We were well looked after by our hosts and treated to an unexpected Coffee at the end. Sometimes it the little things that make the day seem even more enjoyable.
And now to the prize giving. A lot of good scores were posted in the late 30’s and early 40’s and we had winners in both NTP and HI2.

Don’t forget the winners “away day handicap “will be reduced by 2 for the subsequent days out.
The winner of Nearest the Pin (in fact the only one who hit the green!) was Graham H. Well done Graham and for that picked up £10.
Our only player with a Hole in 2 was Brian M, and for that Brian earned £10.
The winner of the lowest number of putts was Dave B needing only 29 putts and for that earned £12.
As promised we now have a new putting trophy from Terry S which is allegedly an original advertising board from Carnouste. I’m not sure how old it is but the clubs are on offer for 7shillings and sixpence! This has been splendidly mounted with engraving plates by Peter S. This trophy will be awarded to the player that either matches, or beats, the lowest number of putts currently recorded on the trophy.
It was awarded first to Terry S for his 26 putts at Sherfield Oaks and then to Dave B for his 25 putts at Shrivenham.
And finally the days special prize, a bottle of wine, sponsored by Brian W for “Most Golf Played”. And the winner was Davinder with 26 points. Davinder becomes our special prize sponsor for our next Away Day at Mapledurham GC on the 19th October. Put that date firmly in your diary!
All in all a great day, a great course and great hosts, and no doubt we will return at a future date.
