Kirtlington AwayDay - Aug 2023

The Tipple on the Tee

With Captain Steve Bury otherwise engaged, it fell to Rob Lindley, Vice Captain to do the prize giving and the write up at this months Away Day.

We were greeted in Kirtlington with bright and sunny weather with very little wind and with 21 players joining us for the Away Day, prospects for a great day of golf looked good.

The staff at Kirtlington looked after us very well, and after an excellent bacon roll it was out onto the first tee for the tipple, a very nice whiskey provided by last month’s winner, Brian Monnery.

Course conditions were excellent and the course proved to be an enjoyable challenge with fast undulating greens, mostly wide fairways in very good condition, some challenging dogleg holes and some tricky long rough for wayward or over ambitious shots.

Scoring was generally good with lots of mid 30 Stableford scores but no one breaking the 40 mark – so no appearance of the Bandit hat.

Overall winner was Terry Rapple with 39 points winning on countback over John Scoble with the same score.  Ron Jones, on his first ever Away Day, was third with 38 points although there was some controversy with Ron’s score including a 2 shot penalty for playing the wrong ball!  Tough luck.  The top three all came from the first group out on the day.

Nearest the pin also went to the first group with Ron Jones putting a marker down early on the 160 yard 16th with no one able to get inside it.

It looked like Terry Rapple was going to win fewest putts as well but late in the day Arthur Strain claimed the prize with a very good 30 putts on the greens that many found tough.

The ‘Most Use of the Course’ was won by Dave Bolus with a Stableford score of 22 points.  In the words of his playing partner “Dave had a bit of a nightmare”.  He can console himself though with the traditional bottle of wine and Steve Gray’s slightly weird bottle of grapes...

The day was rounded off by a meal of ham, egg and chips and again excellent service from the friendly staff at Kirtlington GC.  We will be back.

The next Away Day is at Hennerton on the 19th September and we look forward to another good turn out.

Congratulations to all the winners

Rob
