Our July away day took us to Weybrook Park in Hampshire, another new course for many members of the TOFS Society.
The recent very hot weather appeared to be continuing as the drive there was in bright sunshine and even unloading our golf bag and trolley kit proved demanding due to the heat, which only got worse, or better, depending on how you view very hot weather !
A great turnout of 22 TOFS arrived where we were warmly welcomed by our host Joel. We should have been 24 but unfortunately one had just received a “Covid Ping” and another because of a medical condition, couldn’t make it.
There was a loud buzz of conversation when I arrived just after 10am from the dining room where everyone was already tucking into their bacon rolls and coffee!

The Tipple on the Tee - Thanks to Brian Monnery |
Time to start play and Joel took us down to the first tee where we enjoyed our Martini “Tipple on the Tee”, this time kindly provided by Brian M in celebration of his recent “Hole In One” during a recent TOFS competition back at DPGC. Well done and thanks Brian.
A few practise swings and putts later we then set out in 6 groups to explore the new West downland style course, with undulating landscape and some great views of the surrounding area. It was in excellent condition with generous fairways and quite a few challenging “water” features. The greens were in excellent condition but quite undulating and difficult to read (at least for me!)
As mentioned earlier it was very, very hot out on the course, and unfortunately not without some minor casualties, but we were extremely grateful for the opportunity to refill our water bottles at the halfway house with iced water. (Many thanks to the bar staff!)
After the round we collapsed into the clubhouse (it was too hot outside!) for a very much needed refreshing drink and our Weybrook Cheese burger and chips.
On now to the results and prize giving. A lot of good scores were posted, again reflecting how well the course played!

TOFS Trophy Winner Brian White |
The winner of the TOFS Trophy and stableford on the day with an outstanding score of 43 points was Brian W. Brian won £15 and a 3 pack of shiny new special edition embossed TOFS golf balls. Don’t forget the winners “away day handicap “will be reduced by 2 for the subsequent days out.
The winner of the lowest number of putts was also Brian but he had to share this with Clifford, who both needed only needed 30 putts. Brian and Clifford (who had left a bit earlier to avoid embarrassment) received £7 each for their efforts.

'Hole in 2' & NTP - Paul Wynn |
Our “Hole in Two“competiton was won by Paul W with a magnificent “Hole in One” on the 16th green. The first time a HI1 has been achieved at a TOFS away day. Well done Paul and big thanks for our drink at the bar. It won’t cover his bar bill but Paul was awarded £15.
Weybrook had kindly offered us a 4 ball voucher as a prize and we played for this by Nearest the Pin. Of course this was also awarded to Paul, the other 3 TOFS, drawn out of a hat were Mike I, Les C and Chris S. Have a great day out!

after his hole-in-1
And finally the days special prize, sponsored by Clifford for Most Golf Played. This is supposed to be a Bottle of Wine but Clifford bought a Bottle of Gin (he did try to offer some feeble excuse why it wasn’t wine!)
And the winner was Chris S, (after count back with Simon J) with 25 points.

All in all a great day, even if it was very hot, (did I mention it was hot!), and a course we should definitely visit again.
