Sherfield Oaks AwayDay - 22nd June 2021

Tipple on the Tee
Our June away day took us to Sherfield Oaks in Hampshire, a new course to explore for the TOFS Society. Despite all the recent bad weather the journey there showed promise of it being a dry day, which fortunately proved to be the case for the whole day, with even a little sunshine at times.

A great turnout of 19 TOFS arrived where we were warmly welcomed by our host Julie Bond and given a complimentary pack of tees, pitch mark tool and pencils, during our usual  start to the day of   coffee and bacon rolls. We were again able to have our “Tipple on the Tee”, this time kindly provided by Humph, who treated us to a tot of Glenfiddich whiskey.

A few practise swings and putts later we then set out in 5 groups to explore the Waterloo course.
The course was in excellent condition with generous fairways and lots of doglegs but like Drayton some tricky ditches and trees to deal with. The greens were in excellent condition and as the results will show ran true!

After the round we relaxed inside the barn style clubhouse for a refreshing drink and a delicious meal of Steak and Ale Pie, potatoes and vegetables.

On now to the results and prize giving. A lot of good scores in the 30’s were posted, possibly reflecting how well the course played!

Terry Stacey
The winner of the TOFS Trophy and stableford on the day with an outstanding score of 44 points was Terry S. Terry won £13 and a 3 pack of shiny new special edition embossed TOFS golf balls. Don’t forget the winners “away day handicap “will be reduced by 2 for the subsequent days out.

The winner of the lowest number of putts was also Terry with only 26 putts, possibly the lowest score ever posted by the TOFS at an away day.   Terry put another £13 in his pocket and clearly was on form. So if you play a round with Terry in the next week or so be sure to look to him for a drink!

Hole in 2 Winners
Humph Harker & Dick Capel-Davies
Our “Hole in Two“competiton carried a potential pot of £25 because of carry over from Oxford. In the end two TOFS credibly scored a HI2, these being Humph (on the 7th) and Dick (on the 12th) who shared the pot between them.

Clifford Bosley
Clifford Bosley
And finally the days special prize, sponsored by Chris S for Most Golf Played. And the winner was Clifford B, who only managed 23 points, what went wrong Clifford? Clifford becomes our special prize sponsor for our next Away Day at Weybrook Park GC on the 20th July. Put that date firmly in your diary! All in all a great day and a course we should definitely visit again.
