With the ongoing restrictions due to Covid-19 It was great news that we were able to have another society day out, this time at Wrag Barn GC in Wiltshire.
On the journey to the golf course the skies gave a clue as to what sort of days weather lay ahead, unfortunately a lot of light rain and drizzle , and so it proved to be, with just a little sunshine for brief moments in the afternoon.
It was great was to see two more of our newer members, Peter M and Chris S join us for the first time. Despite the weather I hope you enjoyed your day out with your new golfing friends and colleagues.
A great turnout of 20 TOFS met at 10am for our customary coffee and “man” sized bacon rolls, this time served by masked waiters in the clubhouse, where we sat in safe groups of four, prior to getting our golfing gear and getting ready to start play.
We reluctantly had to forgo our usual “Tipple on the Tee”, as it would have broken the “Rule of Six”. Hopefully we can bring this back soon at some point.
After a few practise swings and putts we then set out in 5 groups of 4 to explore the rolling Wrag Barn course.
I think everybody would agree it was a very fine course in excellent condition, set among the rolling country side, presenting many challenges and somewhere we should revisit, hopefully with much improved weather.
It’s
fair to say it was a bit of a slog getting round because of the
unrelenting drizzle. However we all did make it and then made our way
to the clubhouse to enjoy a drink and our meal of Chicken and Ham
Pie with Chips and Peas , again well set out for us in tables of
four.
The results were generally as might be expected, a bit lower than normal, but with some managing to put in good scores!
The winner of the TOFS Trophy and stableford on the day was Alex Fraser with a stunning 40 points. Alex won £14 and a 3 pack of shiny new special edition embossed TOFS 2020 golf balls. Don’t forget the winners “away day handicap “will be reduced by 2 for the subsequent days out!
The winner(s) of the lowest number of putts, with a very impressive low score of 29, were the two Peters (Metcalfe and Saunders). For this the Peters share £13. [Peter S tells me it’s the 1st time he has won (money) at an away day, well done Peter!!]
Because
of Covid-19 we were unable to have a NTP competition so we
substituted a “Hole in Two “instead. To be
honest I wasn’t expecting anyone to manage this on the day and was
pleasantly surprised to find that in fact we had two winners. This
time both the Terry’s, (Stacey and Rapple), and hence shared £13
winnings between them.
And finally the days special prize, sponsored by Humph Harker for Most Golf Played. And the winner is, Humph Harker! As a two time consecutive winner it was agreed that the prize should be rolled forward for the next away day’s special prize winner.
