Caversham Heath Away Day - 26th Nov 2019

This month’s adventure took us to the Caversham Heath  golf club in Berkshire.

Unfortunately the weather did not favour us again and for the whole day we were submitted to fine drizzle and rain. It didn’t however dampen to much the spirit of the 14 TOFS  who turned out  as we enjoyed our customary tea, coffee and excellent bacon rolls.

The draw for the tee of times were made,  2 groups of 3 and 2 groups of 4 during which time I politely declined a number of enticing offers from members  to manipulate the draw such that they were in the 1st group off !

After the draw we collected our gear and assembled on the front veranda for our “Tipple on the Tee” this time kindly provided by David Boucher.  David had brought a very nice Jim Bean Whiskey. I did spot though some rather large shot glasses being used to transport excess whiskey into coffee flasks! We then made sure our wet gear was in order and walked up the hill to the first tee.

Despite the resident Golf Pro telling us course wasn’t very wet I think we all found it particularly wet underfoot and the ground was very soft, with practice swings generally resulting in large clods of earth clinging to the club head.  Despite that the course played reasonably well and the greens were great.  A different type of course than we are normally accustomed to with few trees (no leaves!) and open fairways, but with longer grass and gorse bushes to the fairway sides.

We all dried off and gathered back in the 19th to recite our tales of woe, and occasional success. Terry S was also trying to convince everyone (all day! ) of his proposal to prevent (the alleged), handicap protection of some unnamed TOFS.  During this we were  served our Cottage pie and veg (with a little extra courtesy Terry R). Even with the little extra I thought the portion size was a little on the small side. Many of us are all still growing lads!

Now to the results. Generally they were a little lower than we would normally expect, probably due to the wet weather and course but with a few exceptions.

The winner of the stableford on the day was David Leak with an excellent 38 points.  David won £9.  Shame I don’t  have any of the shiny embossed TOFS  golf balls.

The winner(s) of the lowest number of putts, with a very credible 31, were joint winners David Boucher and Brian Monnery who shared the £9 winnings.

The honour of the  lowest stableford score and  receiving the “Special Prize” of a bottle of wine went to Brian White, with an outstanding  score of 20, courtesy of last month’s  winner,  Graham Harding.

For the “Nearest the Pin” competition, I had chosen hole number 17, which was a longish drive of 173 yards with a small lake directly in front of the green. Despite some concerns that it may have been too difficult before play we have a winner. In fact we had two players on the fringe (Peter and Humph) and two on the green, Frank and David Boucher.

The winner was David Boucher by a close (ish by our standards) margin and for this David collected a very handsome £25 (due to the previous rollovers).

The coveted “TOFS Trophy” was awarded to David Boucher with his 34 stableford points as David Leak (38), has been a previous winner.  A good day for David !!

Finally, on a more regretful note, 3 members were found to be not wearing their TOFS polo shirts, and for this misdemeanour, were fined £1 each.  In the true spirit of name and shame the guilty members were Frank, Humph and David Boucher.

We are all now looking forward to our  Christmas outing at Hadden Hill in Didcot on Thurday 19th December.

Winners

TOFS Trophy - Dave Boucher 34 points
Best Stableford - Dave Leak 38 points
Lowest Putts - Brian Monnery/Dave Boucher 31 putts
