Glorious
sunshine, not a cloud in the sky, sun cream at the ready… and if
you’d had a captain as good as all the previous captain’s, that’s
what you could have had!
As
it happens, downpours normally associated with a British winter
greeted us at Studley Wood (this was a day for Rob Strange and his
Bicester purchased waterproof top!) Notwithstanding the ‘inclement
weather’ Studley looked superb as always. Bacon roll, coffee and
tea over, the obligatory briefing took place, emphasising pace of
play and timely pre-shot routines (more of a little later)! There
was enough time to hit the driving range, chipping practice area and
the putting green (which had an ever-increasing body of water
threatening to envelop the green)…suffice it to say, the weather
determined the ‘mind-set’ of the players as they cowered under
the veranda until the last safe moment!

TOFS Tipple |
Not
saying we men are weak and the weather was that bad but, the first
tee tipple was performed under cover and Frank kindly provided the
amber nectar (Cointreau and something with ginger in it…). Very
nice
Now
for a few ‘tales from the course…
Watching
Alex Fraser’s pre shot routine is something everyone should witness
at least once in their golfing career (only once!) I really felt for
you Alex on the first tee. I thought your drive was unlucky, your
second was unfortunate, your third even more unfortunate but once
you’d reached the fairway, there was no stopping you (although I
did question whether or not you had another gear when walking a
steady 100 yds behind your playing partners)
Clifford
Bosley was keen to tell his playing partners (Dave L, Mark W and
Graham H) that his ‘underpants’ were wet (not surprising given
the weather) but saying it immediately after commenting on Dave
Leak’s majestic swing was apparently just bad timing…
Brian
Monnery was insistent that I made mention that although he may not
have got nearest the pin, he was quite close to the green!
My
drive on the 13th
was close to perfection, well about 190yds away from perfection to be
honest (drive distance measured at 13.1 yds (and after scrutiny by my
playing partners, it was deemed forward of the Ladies tee, by
millimetres!) That wasn’t half as bad as my ‘air shot’ on the
17th
par 5 (a few derogatory comments followed from my fellow players)!

Special Prize - David Launchbury - 14 points |
Dave
Leak (although not scoring after the 3rd
hole) was intending to give his playing partners a short lesson in
how to hit a ¾ 8 iron into the 16th
167yd Par 3. Impressive practice swing, smooth takeaway, hit through
the ball and… the ball had the audacity to take a detour right
(hard right). Not deterred, Dave played a provisional (always good
shots, right?) NO, same result and we all couldn’t help but have a
little giggle.

for the month:
“Golf
is a compromise between what your ego wants you to do, what
experience tells you to do, and what your nerves let you do.”
